Intelligence. Excellence. Community. Care. These words appeared repeatedly as students, alumni, faculty and friends described the “powerhouse,” as Jill Manoukian called her, that is L. Monique Pittman. Monique is a lifelong learner, as Scott Moncrieff notes, always striving to develop her deep well of knowledge and hone her craft through both exceptional research—three books and counting—and award-winning teaching.
She is, as Ivan Davis attests, a consummate example of a scholar-teacher, and as student after student testifies, she brings her passion for the liberal arts into the classroom with enthusiasm and excitement. Numerous people, including Alexander Hess, Ingrid Radulescu and Maddi Vath, characterized her as a ray of light, a teacher who brings out the absolute best in her students, as Nora Martin, Alyssa Henriquez, Audrey Lim and Andrei Defino affirm.
Indeed, from her classes to her advising to both formal and informal mentorship in the Department of English and as director of the J.N. 美天棋牌 Honors Program, Monique unfailingly makes others “feel seen, valued, and cared for,” as Kylene Cave shares. She daily models her love for “the least of these,” Meredith Jones Gray observes, teaching all those blessed to be in her orbit to do the same. Kristin Denslow credits Monique for making her personal and professional life richer, while Vanessa Corredera states simply, “there are not enough words to convey how she has changed my life.”
An avid gardener, cook and consummate host, Monique Pittman shares her life with her partner in all things, Paul Smith, and is a devoted daughter to her parents, Maxine and Thomas Pittman. She has blessed 美天棋牌 University with 25 years of service, but her legacy will live on much longer through the countless lives she has transformed.
