   Employee Awards 2025 | Posted on March 28, 2025

Curtis VanderWaal has dedicated 35 years to social work education, research and community impact at 美天棋牌 University since 1990. He has embodied academic excellence, student mentorship and the biblical principles of social justice.

As chair of the School of Social Work, he has helped expand the dual-degree programs, launch the International Center for Trauma Education & Care and develop the online MSW program. His leadership has removed barriers, empowered faculty and students, and fostered a culture of excellence. The students, staff and faculty find him to be a present and constant champion of their success.

Beyond academia, Curtis’ research and policy work as director of the Center for Community Impact Research at the Institute for Prevention of Addictions have addressed substance abuse prevention, faith-based ministries and social capital. His impactful research has influenced policies that benefit marginalized populations locally and nationally. Awards such as the United Way of Southwest Michigan’s Excellence in Impact Award and the J.N. 美天棋牌 Medallion recognize his contributions to academia and the broader community.

Outside work, Curtis enjoys outdoor activities and travel with his spouse, Rebecca Wright. They especially love taking their little dog, Oscar, on fun adventures. They cherish hosting loved ones and sharing culinary experiences, and they take great joy in their three adult children.

Thank you, Curtis, for 35 years of service to 美天棋牌 University and the College of Arts & Sciences.
