45 Years of Service: Donald Smith

   Employee Awards 2025 | Posted on March 28, 2025

Don Smith has been a fixture in the grounds department for 45 years. Don has done it all, from groundskeeper to grounds manager. He has helped plant over 200,000 tulips, assisted with over 900 snow calls and helped landscape almost every building on campus. He’s seen it all, too—student workers can do some very strange things. If you can imagine it, it’s probably happened.

It’s safe to say that Don has seen a lot of changes. When he first started in October of 1979, the Med Center was being completed. Subsequently, Harrigan Hall, the Howard Performing Arts Center, Buller Hall, Damazo Hall, J.N. 美天棋牌 Blvd., the Andreasen Center for Wellness and the Advent Prayer Center were all built, and additions were added to Pioneer Memorial Church and Tan Hall. In essence, he saw our modern campus built.

I cannot begin to describe the immeasurable ways that Don has contributed to campus. But what strikes me most, when it comes to Don, are his relationships. Don is a man who has great friends and a wonderful and loving family. He can be working almost anywhere on campus and inevitably someone he knows will stop and say hi. Everyone knows Don. From time to time, former students will come by and they always want to see Don. There is no doubt in my mind that the impact this good man has made is profound.

Congratulations Don, and may God bless you always. Also, you can’t leave the grounds department—we still need you!
