10:45:23 +0000 Academy Athletes Shine at 2025 Newmyer Classic http://www.andrews.edu/agenda/66925
Seventeen Adventist academies, with nearly 50 coaches and more than 400 student-athletes, and the ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University community were able to enjoy a busy weekend of basketball and fellowship with another successful installment of the Newmyer Classic. Teams from across the United States and one from Canada played against each other throughout the day on Jan. 30, before sunset on Jan. 31 and after sunset on Feb. 1 while having opportunities to learn more about attending ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University and exploring its campus.

From the 17 academies came a total of 42 different basketball teams, 12 in the Boys Division 1 bracket and 10 each in the other brackets—Girls Division 1, Girls Division 2 and Boys Division 2. Games, which were played with eight-minute quarters, were attended by supporters and interested spectators in the Andreasen Center for Wellness (ACW), Johnson Gym and ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ Academy Gym. Each game venue used two courts to play two games simultaneously throughout the weekend, except for the championship games on the night of Feb. 1 in the ACW.

The games were played in a tournament bracket, and each team hoped to leave the Newmyer Classic with a championship trophy on the third and final night. On Saturday night, the first two teams to face off in a championship game were the hometown ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ Academy Junior Cardinals Junior Varsity Girls and the Collegedale Academy Eagles Junior Varsity Girls from Tennessee in the Girls Division 2 Final.

Both teams’ offense started off slow in the first quarter before they settled in and battled in a tightly contested first half. The Eagles were able to lead at halftime with a score of 20-12, yet the Junior Cardinals kept it close, led by Alayna Prentice, who finished the game with 20 points. Prentice and the Junior Cardinals were able to trim the Eagle lead down in the third quarter, but ultimately, the Eagles came out on top with a score of 40-29, with Natalia Gustafson's 17 points as a huge factor.

The following game, the Boys Division 2 Final, between the Collegedale Academy Eagles Junior Varsity and the Georgia-Cumberland Academy Jaguars, proved to be a worthy follow-up, with both sides scoring in impressive stretches early on. The Jaguars seemed to have the upper hand initially, in part thanks to Danny Ghansah, who scored eight straight points for the Jaguars during the first half and finished with 14. Eli Davis also made significant contributions throughout the game with a total of 17 points.

However, the physicality, roster depth and defensive prowess shown by the Eagles led them to win the game by a large margin, with a final score of 75-41. Everyone on the Eagles roster scored at least once, with Ethan Lemon (16 points), Josh Hocking (12 points) and Zane Gustafson (10 points) leading the team.

The Girls Division 1 Final was a serious defensive matchup from start to finish. The North Tampa Christian Academy Titans and the Forest Lake Academy Panthers both found it difficult to score against each other’s defense early on. Players on both teams started to find better rhythm during a very competitive second quarter, which ended with a score of 23-16 in favor of the Titans. Braelyn Isidro’s relentless pursuit of the basketball kept her Panthers in the game as she led the team with 13 points. However, both Isidro and the Panthers were ultimately outplayed in the second half by the Titans, who were led by Cali Midyett, who also scored 13 points. More contributions from her teammates led the Titans to win the game 46-30.

The final match of the Newmyer Classic, the Boys Division 1 Final between the North Tampa Christian Academy Titans and the ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ Academy Junior Cardinals, was very well attended despite it beginning nearly an hour after its scheduled 10:30 p.m. start. The Titans started off the game hot, establishing an eight-point lead early, but the Junior Cardinals battled back, cutting the Titan lead to three after an acrobatic buzzer-beater three-pointer by Eric Kacelenga.

The game remained physical and competitive throughout, with the Titans refusing to surrender their lead despite several Junior Cardinal runs. The Titans were able to build a double-digit lead for most of the second half, but the Junior Cardinals refused to back down as their leading scorer, Maqhawe Mangena, who finished the game with 14 points, made several impressive plays against the Titans bench players. The deficit was as little as six points with less than two minutes to go before the Titans starters were subbed in to close out the game. Caden Selvi led the Titans with 19 points scored, followed by Noah Nguyen and Sean Matthews, who both scored 13.

To close out the tournament weekend, the first and second-place teams in all four divisions were presented with their trophies. A Newmyer Classic Leadership Award was also awarded to Mark Zimmerman, one of the sponsors and coaches for Shenandoah Valley Academy’s Girls Division 1 team.

To learn more about the 2025 Newmyer Classic, please visit the ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University Office of Athletics website. The tournament was formerly known as the Cardinal Classic until its name change in 2016, honoring the Newmyer family, who have been dedicated supporters and contributors to Christian and Seventh-day Adventist education for generations. The tournament features men’s and women’s basketball teams from numerous Seventh-day Adventist academies across North America. Approximately 40 teams will participate with more than 600 students, coaches and other staff members.

Teams from Canada and across the United States will arrive in Berrien Springs the evening of Jan. 29, with games starting early the next morning. The Andreasen Center for Wellness, Johnson Gym and ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ Academy gymnasium will be used for the tournament’s early rounds. On Saturday night, Feb. 1, the championship games for each of the four divisions (men’s varsity, women’s varsity, men’s junior varsity and women’s junior varsity) will take place in the Andreasen Center for Wellness. Division assignments will be based on school size, season records and level of play.

The Newmyer Classic has been organized by the ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University Office of Athletics since the 2000s. This year, Brian Nelson and Athletic Director Kevin Wooldridge serve as the tournament’s directors. Nelson, a 2015 and 2016 graduate of ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University, has stayed connected to the ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ community and works on the tournament's scheduling, rules and behind-the-scenes logistics. Wooldridge and Assistant Athletic Director Richie Silie arranged team registrations and managed additional tournament staff and up-front logistics.

Although the teams and student athletes will be coming to play basketball, Nelson shared that the Newmyer Classic goes deeper than that. “I would say the primary goal is to help lead these students to Christ. Another goal is that you have these schools and the students get to see ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ, experience what ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ has to offer and hope to have them be a student at ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ at some point in their college career.”

Nelson, who also played in the Newmyer Classic as a high school student, shared that he experienced first-hand how the community aspect of the tournament can be very enriching for the participants. “I think allowing all these Adventist schools to have connections with each other and for students to create long-lasting friendships on and off the court is cool to see.”

Teams will play about five games each, have access to all-you-can-eat lunches and dinners through ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University’s Dining Services, and stay in University housing. The visiting teams will also attend a vespers program on Friday at 7 p.m. and a Sabbath afternoon program, both specifically created for Newmyer Classic attendees, in the Howard Performing Arts Center.

The first round of games will start on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 8 a.m. in the various gyms, and games will end at 9 p.m. Friday’s games will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Championship matchups will be determined at the end of the games on Friday, and the Saturday night games in the Andreasen Center for Wellness will occur as follows:

Division II Girls—6:45 p.m.

Division II Boys—8 p.m.

Division I Girls—9:15 p.m.

Division I Boys—10:30 p.m.

The championship games, along with several others, will be livestreamed on YouTube, and limited in-person seating will be available. Please visit the ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University Office of Athletics website for more information about the Newmyer Classic and other ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ athletic events.
Mon, 27 Jan 2025 16:57:11 +0000 Theology Professor Named Finalist in Book Awards http://www.andrews.edu/agenda/66864
The book “Why We Pray: Understanding Prayer in the Context of Cosmic Conflict,” written by John Peckham, research professor of theology and Christian philosophy at ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University, was recently recognized as one of the top works in academic theology in the 2024 Christianity Today Book Awards. In his book, Peckham addresses many of the complex and complicated questions surrounding prayer and communication with God. Although made for an academic setting, “Why We Pray” is intentionally written to be accessible to all who are interested in matters of theology.

“Why We Pray” addresses various prayer-related questions from a biblical perspective and by incorporating insights from Peckham’s previous book, “Theodicy of Love: Cosmic Conflict and the Problem of Evil.” “Why We Pray” is broken up into six sections that look at different aspects of prayer. Peckham discusses the necessity of petitionary prayer, understanding the God individuals pray to, the Lord’s Prayer, the rules and potential problems that can be encountered with petitionary prayer, seemingly unanswered prayers, and praying when God seems hidden.

Peckham shares that while he covered some of these topics briefly in his previous book, “Divine Attributes: Knowing the Covenantal God of Scripture,” he was motivated to explore prayer more deeply by some of his students. “I talked about it a little bit in class, and I had ideas,” says Peckham. “I would like to do some work on the so-called problem of petitionary prayer because a lot of people have questions about how prayer works.”

Peckham adds that he has contemplated the complexities of prayers ever since his childhood. “I was a PK, a pastor’s kid,” says Peckham. “I remember people praying that God would heal a sick person. ‘Please, God, heal this person if it is your will.’ And I remember thinking to myself, ‘Well, why wouldn’t it be God’s will to heal his servant?’”

Although it took time, Peckham came to better understand God’s providence and how He communicates with people. This understanding motivated Peckham to share his knowledge and advice with others. He notes, “It’s published [as an academic book], but I tried to write it very accessibly so that any student or layperson would be able to read it and understand it and grasp it.”

Peckham draws from an impactful and Spirit-led career in theology and academia. He received his Master of Divinity and PhD in systematic theology from the Seventh-day Theological Seminary at ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University. He served as a pastor in the Indiana Conference and taught at Southwestern Adventist University before he rejoined ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University as a faculty member in the Seminary in 2013. He has since received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and research. Peckham is also the main contributor to this quarter’s Adult Bible Study Guide for the Seventh-day Adventist World Church and currently serves as an associate editor of the Adventist Review.

When the Christianity Today Book Awards were announced, Peckham was surprised. “I found out the day that they released it on their website,” he shares. “It’s a great honor and a privilege. The Christianity Today Book Awards are among the most, if not the most, prestigious book awards that one could be awarded in the area of theology. So the fact that they named my book as a finalist for academic theology book of the year was just very humbling and very much appreciated and very encouraging.”

Peckham already has plans for his next book with Baker Academic, which will be released in 2026. “It’s about Jesus’ ministry as our high priest and the context of the cosmic conflict,” he says. Peckham also has several other smaller writing projects planned in addition to his continued teaching responsibilities.

To view a sample of “Why We Pray” and purchase the full book, please visit the Baker Academic website. The aim of the initiative is to provide resources to help churches in rural areas and small towns enhance the vitality of their ministries and strengthen the leadership of the pastors and lay leaders who guide them.

¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University’s project has two goals: to strengthen rural and small-town pastoral leadership and to create and expand resources that address pressing rural and small-town challenges. The University will carry out these goals in a number of ways.

First, ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ will provide mentoring in community engagement to rural and small-town pastors and their congregations. The Center for Community Change, established in 2023 by the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University, will work with surrounding rural and small-town congregations to engage their communities with the goal of becoming community hubs.

Second, the University will work with partner organizations to develop a comprehensive range of resources to be used by these congregations to address the needs of their communities (e.g., mental health, drug addiction, loneliness and abuse). The development of these resources will be coordinated by the Center for Community Change and the North American Division’s Adventist Learning Community (ALC), Adventist Community Services department, and Ministerial Association. The resources will then be made widely available through the ALC platform. In addition, the Center for Community Change will be incorporated into the ALC platform, integrating the resources developed with the mentoring provided by the Center.

Finally, the grant will fund projects on campus as well as at other Adventist universities. Undergraduate theology students at North American Adventist institutions such as ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University, Burman University, Oakwood University, Southern Adventist University and Southwestern Adventist University will receive funding to participate in rural and small-town placements during their programs of study. The grant will also provide financial backing for the International Center for Trauma Education & Care at ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University to help rural and small-town congregations address the causes and impact of trauma within their wider communities.

Cedric Vine, the project leader and an associate professor of New Testament at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, shares, “contrary to popular perception, rural and small-town communities are not hotbeds of religious fundamentalism but instead report the same levels of religious unbelief as urban communities while experiencing higher levels of social problems. Population shifts have led to the closure of many services. There are fewer shared spaces where members of the community can meet and support each other.”

He continues, “This represents a great opportunity for our churches to reimagine themselves as community hubs where support can be provided in partnership with the community. We need to undertake the hard work of reimagining how our communities might be transformed by kingdom values. I am thrilled that the Seminary at ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University can be part of this process and thank John Wesley Taylor V, president of ¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University, and Jiří Moskala, dean of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, for their strong support and commitment to this important initiative.”

¶·Å£ÆåÅÆ University is one of 20 organizations from across the United States receiving grants through the Lilly Endowment initiative, including colleges and universities, denominational agencies, church networks and parachurch organizations, among others.

“Our hope is that these grants will provide much needed resources and support to rural and small-town churches to help them address their challenges and enhance and extend the many ways that they serve their communities,” says Christopher L. Coble, Lilly Endowment’s vice president for religion.

About Lilly Endowment Inc.
Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly, Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. Although the gifts of stock remain a financial bedrock of the Endowment, it is a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff and location. In keeping with the founders’ wishes, the Endowment supports the causes of community development, education and religion and maintains a special commitment to its founders’ hometown, Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana. A primary aim of its grantmaking in religion is to deepen the religious lives of Christians, principally by supporting efforts that enhance congregational vitality and strengthen the leadership of Christian communities. The Endowment values the broad diversity of Christian traditions and endeavors to support them in a wide variety of contexts. The Endowment also seeks to foster public understanding about religion by encouraging fair, accurate and balanced portrayals of the positive and negative effects of religion on the world and lifting up the contributions that people of all faiths make to our greater civic well-being.
Mon, 06 Jan 2025 11:47:05 +0000
